Uk Saltwater fly fishing Species

Scad (Horse Mackerel)

Shore Caught record 3-00-14 Cockenzie, Scotland R Dillon 1981
Boat record - 3-05-03 Torbay, Devon M A Atkins 1978
Fishing season -April to October
Likely Shore Locations - Estuaries and offshore
Methods - The Scad migration brings then to our shores in the spring. Scad are renowned as great night time shoaling feeders .Scad have large eyes to help track down small baitfish prey in the dark. Often Blitzing in the same manner as mackerel. Floating or Intermediate lines and medium fast speed retrieves are known to be successful . I have taken Scad during the daytime while Kayak fishing for blitzing Schoolies and mackerel. They are turned on by tidal flow so seek out Rips and faster flowing water. Scad are members of the Trevally Family so they croak and fight!

Flies - Sparse Baitfish profiles . Like small DNA clousers or small poppers
