Hows this for a review from Corin Smith of Flycastaway
Hi Austen - The Shiltons are fantastic workhorse reels. Most of my experience with Shiltons has been with the SL series which I’ve been using for a couple of years now. I’ve found the drag to be just as good (powerful but with finesse) as any Abel or Tibor and the construction is bomb proof. I’m a bit lazy about servicing reels and mine are all virtually mint after two years of dunking. Its still nice to own an Abel, they are such beautiful reel, but for a professional guide looking for something that’s simple, rock solid, high performing and good value, Shilton are in a league of their own. I’ve used the CK series in freshwater for South African Yellowfish (sort of like a small Masheer) and they are excellent too. For a disc drag, they are unbelievably smooth. I had no hesitation fishing tippets as light as 3lbs.
I think the SL5 and SL6 will be good for UK inshore SWFFing, nicely balancing most 7-10wt rods, and the SL6, 7 and 8 totally reliable for heavier work and the biggest of fish.
Cheers - Say no more!! AG |
